The UCSD Division of Pediatric Surgery specializes in surgery for children and young people. We treat a variety of problems, from diseases or injuries to congenital disorders. We perform many complex and specialized procedures including chest and abdominal surgery, cancer surgery, and transplants.

UCSD teams with Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center of San Diego to provide surgical care for children and young people from throughout San Diego and the metropolitan area. In a survey released in January 2007, Child magazine ranked Rady Children’s Hospital as one of the top 25 children’s hospitals in the nation.

Our surgeons are highly respected researchers who are working to develop better ways of understanding, diagnosing and treating the health problems that affect children:

Dr. Stephen Bickler is a board-certified pediatric surgeon who has had advanced fellowship training in pediatric surgery, tropical medicine and hygiene.

Dr. Karen Kling is a specialist in general surgery and transplant surgery in children. She has advanced fellowship training from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in both pediatric surgery and pediatric transplant.
